About Waku

Waku comprises a family of generalized P2P communication protocols, forming the messaging layer of the Logos stack. Designed to be private, resistant to censorship, and both modular and scalable, Waku can operate across varied environments, including mobile devices and browsers, while ensuring users' rights to private communications.

About Status

Status is a blockchain-based super app integrating private messaging, a digital wallet, a DApp browser, and tools for web3 community management. Since its inception in 2017, Status has aimed to be a genuinely decentralized communication tool by gradually eliminating reliance on centralized infrastructure. The application harnesses Waku and other technologies developed under the IFT umbrella.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and document the existing chat and related app protocols within the Status application.
  • Design and specify new application protocols that utilize Waku, Codex, and other IFT technologies, ensuring these protocols are scalable and preserve privacy.
  • Employ a layered protocol approach, clearly defining requirements, provisions, applicable threat models, and trade-offs.
  • Develop proof of concepts (PoCs) to showcase the functionality of newly developed or modified protocols using nimlang and JavaScript.
  • Coordinate with the Waku research team to comprehend Waku protocols and develop secure applications.
  • Engage with Status leadership to agree on properties for new protocols and related user-facing features.
  • Collaborate with expert researchers at Vac to leverage their specialized knowledge in cryptography and other relevant fields.
  • Partner with Waku test engineers to simulate and test new or modified protocol behaviors.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Strong academic background with hands-on experience in applied research, including translating findings into user-facing products.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, particularly in interpreting and drafting new technical specification documents.
  • Experience with off-the-shelf networking stacks such as libp2p.
  • Familiarity with encryption and key exchange mechanisms.
  • Proven experience in developing end-to-end instant messaging protocols.
  • Proficiency in low-level, strongly typed languages (C/C++/Go/Rust).
  • Deep alignment with our mission: Logos Mission, Waku About.

Bonus Points

  • Comfort with remote and asynchronous work settings.
  • Experience with open source organizations.
  • Familiarity with cryptography solutions such as OTR, X3DH, Noise protocol.
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for blockchain and decentralized technologies.

  3. Pair programming session with a Waku Team member using a take-home task.
  4. Interview with the Chat/App Protocol Team Lead and Status App Lead.
  5. Interview with the Waku Lead.

Compensation

The anticipated compensation range for this position is $120,000 - $150,000 (negotiable, based on your assessed skills and experience throughout our interview process). Payment can be made in any combination of fiat and crypto.
